Position Purpose

Assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of all types of trains/locomotives (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passenger). Ensure that freight/cargo reaches its destination in good condition and on time to satisfy customer needs.



Position Outputs

  1. Daily Operations:

    • Sign on duty and be allocated tasks for the shift.

    • Prepare locomotives by checking and placing necessary equipment.

    • Start locomotives and assist with brake tests.

  2. Communication Equipment:

    • Obtain and check communication devices for functionality.

  3. Pre-Trip Preparation:

    • Ensure locomotives and trains adhere to roadworthiness and safety standards.

    • Execute tasks like attaching/detaching vehicles, mounting indicators, and conducting brake tests.

  4. Shunting Activities:

    • Perform shunting as per directives to enhance safe operations.

  5. Assistance to Train Driver:

    • Assist en route to ensure the train moves safely to its destination.

    • Document and report any incidents or deviations during the journey.

  6. Safety Compliance:

    • Adhere to safety standards and protocols.

  7. Administrative Duties:

    • Complete the train journal and submit after every shift.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Requirements:

    • Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Willingness to undergo periodic medical surveillance.

    • Candidates must be at least 1.6m tall.

    • Must be able to carry heavy objects.

  • Functional Training:

    • Must successfully complete all required training to work as a Train Assistant.
